Chapter 16

I get back from lunch and surprisingly find Anda at her desk. “I thought you had to stay home to take care of your son?” I ask her.

“He lied about being sick,” she said with a hint of nervousness in her voice. “You know how kids are, he just didn’t want to go to school because of a test he didn’t study for. I dropped him off and came to work, I need the money. Now if you want to give me a paid day off, then I would be more than happy to leave.”

“No, not having you here this morning put me behind.”

I see a slight smirk forming on her face, not sure if it’s because I just said I need her or because I said I am behind. Either way I don’t care, at least now I have some time to catch up on some work with Judeth and maybe put myself back in her good graces.

I walk into my office to grab some files and find another note on my desk. It looks just like the other two, same handwriting and everything.

‘Be careful of the company you keep.’

What’s that supposed to mean? Is Judeth really that jealous that I went to lunch with Perry? I have to say something. I like Judeth, but she can’t tell me who I can go out with. I’ve had it with bosses trying to take advantage of me.

I grab the note and head to her office. I’m going to tell her, if she wants to be friends with me, then she has to respect my decisions. Otherwise, we will just keep it professional. I knock on her door, and when she invites me in, I boldly march in to let her know I mean business. She doesn’t even look up from her paperwork.

“How was your lunch date?” she asks before I could say anything. She doesn’t sound agitated anymore. Maybe she got over whatever it was that was pissing her off this morning.

“Fine, actually, it was very good.”

She looks up from her organized mess and asks, “Then why do you look so upset?”

As she asks me this, I notice the handwriting on the papers spread over her desk. It’s different than the one on the letters. What if wasn’t her?

“Someone has been leaving notes on my desk.”

“What do you mean?”

“Someone is going into my office when I am not there, and leaving notes on my desk.”

“What kind of notes?”

“I don’t know. One note says that they’ll take care of the cops for me. Another says that they’ll always have my back. Now this one says to be careful of the company I keep. I’m not sure what to make of them.”

I hand her the note and she looks it over.

“Did you ask Anda who’s been in your office?”

“No.”

Now I feel stupid. I didn’t ask Anda because I thought it was her, I’m glad I just didn’t straight up accuse her.

“Well then let’s go ask her,” Judeth says.

We both walk towards Anda’s desk, Judeth with her stern expression, and me trying my best to look stern.
